What To Look For In A Personal Trainer

For whatever reason, you have decided a personal trainer is the way to go. Where do you go from here? It can be difficult to hire the right personal trainer. But, there are certain criteria you should look for when making this decision.

Here is a list of things you should consider:

Personality – This is often overlooked but it is probably the most important. This is someone you will be spending time and money with. You need to make sure you will be able to get along with each other or it will be a waste of both for each of you. You also want to make sure you are hiring someone who will keep you motivated towards reaching your fitness goals without scaring the life out of you at the same time.

Accreditation – Do they have any special certifications related to fitness training? If so, this shows they are dedicated to remaining current on the latest training information.

Experience – How much and what kind of experience do they have? Make sure they have experience in the area you are looking for. If you are trying to shed those pregnancy pounds, make sure you hire a trainer with this kind of experience.

Education – Do they have any education or qualifications related to this field? They don’t necessarily need a degree in kinetic physiology, but they should have some instruction recognized by the industry. You can easily research acceptable qualifications on the internet.

References – Never hesitate to ask for references. They should be more than willing to provide a list of names and contact information of former or current clients. Try contacting several of them, too. This will give you a good idea of how they operate and if you think they will be a good fit for you. If you sense any hesitation from the trainer in providing the names or from the people you talk to, this person may not be right for you.

Fees – Many trainers will offer a free consultation up front. Make sure to ask them what they charge for their services and if you will get a discount if you book several sessions at a time. Find out how and when they expect to be paid. Also find out what their rescheduling policy is in case you are not able to make an appointment.

Insurance – Ask if your trainer has liability insurance related to their profession. This will include any damage to your property or injuries you suffer because of their possible negligence. Having insurance shows you this person takes their job seriously.

Specialization – You were looking for something when you made the decision to hire a personal trainer so make sure this one can provide it to you. You don’t want to hire a weight-training specialist when you are looking for a cardiovascular exercise trainer.
If you keep these things in mind and ask the proper questions, you should be able to find the perfect personal trainer rather easily.
